The Bible and The European Unification

In the frame of the European community policy that is based on economic and political aspects, the fact of its spiritual significance is minimized. The European nations are headed towards a deeper and more important unification with faith to the so called European spirit. On the same time, the European identity is worth prevail, because without this, every effort of economic and political unification will fail. Even if one does not accept the European civilization to be based on the Greek, it is impossible to deny the influence of the Greek philosophy, literature, art and democracy on the European identity (Passias Γ., 1997, 266-267). The main factor that intervene between the Greek spirit and modern European identity is Christianity. (Zizioulas 2006, 13-29). Jurgen Habermas refers to the permanent presence of religion in cosmic societies (Habermas J., 2001, 13), fact that make us recognise the irreplaceable anthropological, sociological and cultural functions of Christianity in the evolution of the Europe. In education, the Bible contributes to the understanding of existence of the unique religious tradition of nations. The Bible is also a dialog with the modern world, with the modern pedagogical challenges and the use of New Technologies. Christianity is a proposal of life, freedom and culture in a multicultural Europe. The teaching of Christian tradition is a teaching of the values of the European civilization, which is only understood thru the appraisal of its European dimension (Delikostantis K., 1997). Nations with strong traditional conscience, as the Europeans can not loose their historical background. (Zizioulas 2006, 13-29). The teaching of the Bible is valuable because it preserves the pedagogical character of the school and is the criterion for its shelf cantered orientation, since education is as important as the impartment of knowledge and as necessary as the acquisition of skills. (Delikostantis K.,1997).
